There are 3 main ways one could become eligible for permanent residency in the UK, as a non-EU citizen with no family ties to the UK.
- You could marry a British citizen earning more than £18600, or a British citizen with more than £62500 in savings. That would give you the right to live in the UK. Then after X years you could apply for PR provided the marriage lasted for y years. ( I don’t have the precise figures for x and y ).
- You could get a good job. The Tier 2 ( General ) work visa is the visa that leads after 5 years to PR. But to qualify for that visa you need to ( in most cases ) find a graduate job paying a salary of £30000 per annum or more. Plus you need to find an employer willing to act as your sponsor. The employer has to pay the government a fee of £2000 for each non-EU worker he hires. The only exceptions there are to that £30k minimum salary rule are jobs related to the occupations on the government’s “shortage occupation” list. Eg. Nurses, Doctors, graduate engineers, Maths & Physics school teachers, Geoscientists, & Chefs for ethnic foods. Visit Welcome to GOV.UK
for the official list of shortage occupations. Then after 5 years in work you can apply for PR provided by the end of that 5 year period you are earning at least £35000. September 2019 update : Boris Johnson’s government has announced they will be reintroducing the 2 year post-study work visa. This new visa will allow International students to stay on in the UK for up to 2 years doing any job they can find be it a job in McDonald’s or a job as an investment banker depending on your luck. This rule change is for international students starting their course in Academic year 2020/21; so students starting their course August/ September 2020 or later. If you are rich you can apply for a Tier 1 Investment visa. Tier 1 Investment visa holders can be granted PR after a couple of years. To qualify for a Tier 1 investment visa you need to buy £750,000 worth of UK government bonds and you need to be worth of at least £2 million. You need assets of at least £2 million or £2 million in your bank account. After X years the £750,000 is returned. Tier 1 Investment visas do not have to look for a job or start a business if they don’t want to. Neither do they need to spend the majority of their time in the UK.
