Difference between a UK residence permit and an indefinite card?

residence permit

A residence permit is the card issued to anyone who has been given temporary or permanent right to reside in the UK. It will state the type of residence and any remarks and restrictions.

It’s the famous BRP (biometric residence permit).

In this one, it’s a student. They aren’t permanent. The Type lists their visa, in this case a Tier 4 student. The remarks gives the working limitations.

If a person gets Indefinite Leave to Remain, they get the same card, but it has that information on it. (this image from an earlier Quora post)

Note that the card itself has a validity, even thought the person has Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). His ILR doesn’t expire (unless he loses it by being out of the country too long), but the card does. Just like a driving licence or passport.
